Our after school kids have been baking and eating Sophia!

Who is Sofia? She is a traditional sourdough culture brought to the farm by our Programs Director, Hope! Sourdough cultures are made up of natural yeast and bacteria, creating a natural leavening agent. Many sourdough cultures have been around for over a century and have been preserved and shared among people. A portion of the sourdough culture is used to bake new loaves of bread or rolls. The remaining culture is "fed" with more flour and water, allowing it to grow and the yeast and bacteria to reproduce, replenishing the removed portion. In some ways, maintaining a sourdough starter is like taking care of a pet. It needs regular attention, ensuring it has food and an adequately sized "home" or container to reside in. Sofia bakes into a lightly tangy, resilient bread that is absolutely delicious. Just ask our after-school students. If you are interested in learning more about the history of sourdough, check out A Brief History of Sourdough by Eric Pallant.

Sofia is from San Francisco. She, along with her original jar, was handed down through multiple generations in the family who started her. Hope was able to get a portion of the starter from https://heirloomsourdough.com/. Sophia excels at making dinner rolls and is known for her lively, bubbly personality!

Snow Day? Is it a school holiday or a teacher work day? Bring the kids for a fun-filled day at the farm!

Schools frequently close on days when parents must work. While inclement weather days are unpredictable, we've got you covered! Snow day camps are available if you can safely bring yourself and your children to the farm. On such days, please call us at 919-968-8581 to confirm we can accommodate your camper. Register via email. Our minicamps cover school breaks and other planned days off during the school year. We adhere to the Chapel Hill Carrboro schools and Durham year-round schools calendars. If you need a day not included in our regular offerings, please contact us!

Cool weather brings to mind baked apple desserts. Give this Apple Crisp recipe a try—it's like an apple pie without needing to make a crust!

We wish you joy and love in your life this winter. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
